By the time lunch rolled around, Sabrina was ready to strangle the boy. So when she saw Daphneâs smiling face in the cafeteria, it was like seeing a rainbow. The little girl was surrounded by her classmates, who, as they had the day before, looked at her as if she were a movie star. When Daphne spotted Sabrina and Puck, she excused herself and joined them at a table in the far corner of the room.
âHow has your day been?â she asked.
âItâs been horrible,â Sabrina said.
âTell my sister I wasnât talking to her,â Daphne said to Puck. âI was talking to you.â
Sabrina rolled her eyes. âHow long are you going to be mad at me?â
âRemind my sister that I just said I was not talking to her,â the little girl said to Puck.
Puck grinned. âThe squirt says she isnât talking to you.â
âGet over it!â Sabrina cried.
âTell my sister when she stops being a snot I will get over it.â
âShe says when you stop being a disgusting booger-crusted freak she will honor you with a conversation, but until then, shove off,â Puck said.
âThis is ridiculous,â the older girl said, staring down at her serving of not-too-green green beans.
âAsk my sister what ridiculous means,â Daphne said.
âShe wants to know what â¦â
âI heard her!â Sabrina growled at the boy. âIt means you are being silly! It means you are being a baby!â
âTell my sister that Iâm rubber and sheâs glue and whatever she says bounces off me and sticks to her.â
âYour sister says â¦â
âPuck!â Sabrina shouted. She turned back to her food and took a bite of something she thought might be chicken. It wasnât even close.
âWell, if youâre not going to talk to me, then you wonât know that Iâve found a clue,â she said.
Daphneâs face lit up as bright as the sun. âWhat kind of clue?â
âAre you done with the silent treatment?â her sister asked.
âDepends on how good the clue is.â
âYou know those dusty footprints we were following last night? Well thereâs a kid in my homeroom whose feet were covered in the same dust.â
âWhat did you do?â Daphne asked, interested despite herself.
âI tried to follow him, but he slipped into the boiler room,â Sabrina said. âWeâre going to have to come back after everyoneâs gone and do some snooping.â
Daphne smiled and hugged Sabrina.
Puck sniffed the creamed corn on his tray. He reached down with his bare hand and scooped some up. Then he licked it with his tongue. âAny of those disgusting warts show up, yet?â
âMs. White told me that you donât get warts from touching frogs,â the little girl growled. âNot even frog-girls.â
âAhh, Iâm sorry to see that little joke die.â The boy sighed as creamed corn dripped down his wrist and onto his clean shirt. âI had you completely freaked out.â
âHardy-har-har, Puck, you are so un-punk rock,â Daphne said, turning her attention to her sister. âSo, whatâs the plan?â
âFirst, you have to get a detention,â Sabrina said as she eyed her gray hamburger.
âWhat?â Daphne cried.
âPuck got us in trouble, so we have to stay after school.
